Mixed Fortunes in World Cup Qualifiers

INTERNATIONAL: Argentina are on track to qualify for Qatar 2022, following their 3-0 win over Uruguay on Sunday, but across the Atlantic, in Libya, it looks to be game over for Libya after their loss to Egypt on Monday night. Such are the mixed fortunes of the world cup qualifying stages which draw to a close early next year.

Argentina were back in training on Monday and are looking pretty much sure of qualifying for next year’s world cup in Qatar. They currently lie in second place in the 10-team South American qualifying group. The top four teams will automatically qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Argentina next face Peru on Thursday where they are favourites to win. The two sides last faced off in November, with Lionel Messi's team coming out on top 2-0.

But while it’s tango time in Argentina, it might be time for the final whistle for Libya. They slid down the ranks in the group stage for the World Cup qualifiers after suffering a 3-0 defeat against Egypt on Monday night. Heartbroken fans packed squares in the country’s east and west as defeat on the home front was sealed by a third goal in the second half. Libya now have six points after four rounds of matches in the group, but still face tough assignments against Angola and Gabon. Only the top finisher in each of Africa’s 10 groups advances to the playoffs.
